Hundreds of thousands of people came out on Thursday, September 11, on the streets of Barcelona in action in support of a referendum on the independence of Catalonia in the national day of this autonomy. It is reported Agence France-Presse.
According to the mayor of Barcelona, the event was attended by 1.8 million people, at the same time, the government of Spain announced 470-520 thousands of protesters. The participants, dressed in yellow and red t-shirts (colors of the flag of Catalonia)requested on 9 November referendum on independence, autonomy, standing in the shape of a giant letter V, which in Spanish begin with the words "victory", "will" and "voting".
The first attempts to separate from Spain Catalan authorities have taken in the beginning of the last century. In 1979, Catalonia has achieved Autonomous status, and the Catalan language was recognized as an official in the region. In 2006, the region received more financial independence. In 2009 and 2010 Catalonia held a series of informal referenda that was made for the issue of independence. After the regional elections of 2012, the majority of the deputies of the local Parliament were supporters of independence. The last referendum was scheduled for November 9, but the Spanish Parliament declared it illegal.
Demonstration in Catalonia was held on the eve of the referendum on Scottish independence from the UK, which will take place on 18 September 2014. If most of the population will vote for secession from the United Kingdom, Scotland will be declared independent on 24 March 2016.
