• A scientist from the MSU invented a system of measuring the climate in the Arctic

  • Researcher, Pacific Oceanological Institute named Ilicheva (POI Feb RAS) have developed a method of forecasting climate change and development of natural processes in the Arctic, using sediment from the bottom of lakes and seas. The project received a grant from the Russian science Foundation (RNF) to 2.3 million rubles, said TASS the author of the project Alexander Kolesnik.

"The expected results have potential practical value and can be used in paleoreconstruction with subsequent projections of climate change, the extent and thickness of sea ice, biological productivity, development of hazardous natural processes and the overall health of strategically important regions of the country, expansion of mineral resource base, which is especially important for the Arctic region", — said Kolesnik.

The data scientist will be taken from existing samples of surface layer sediments from the East Siberian and Chukchi seas with the adjoining areas of the Arctic ocean, the Kuril-Kamchatka trench with the adjacent part of the abyssal plains of the Pacific ocean, the Kuril basin of the Okhotsk sea and lake Baikal.
