• The calculated damage from the largest-ever U.S. oil spill

  • American scientists conducted the first comprehensive assessment of the financial damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. A study published in the journal Science, briefly about it it reports EurekAlert!

    The damage from the oil spill is estimated at 17.2 billion dollars. That is, according to scientists, the value of the lost natural resources and ecosystem elements. The authors, in the Gulf of Mexico were about 507,2 million litres of liquid hydrocarbons.

    To such conclusions scientists have come, having calculated the amount of money (153 USD), which the typical American middle class family is ready to allocate for the implementation of prevention programmes on the prevention of environmental disasters.

    The explosion of the oil platform Deepwater Horizon, located 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico occurred on 20 April 2010. The ensuing oil spill was the largest in U.S. history
