• Patriarch Kirill has written to world leaders about the situation of the UOC (MP)

  • The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill has sent letters to world leaders regarding the consideration of the Verkhovna Rada of laws restricting the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. About it reported on the website of the ROC.

    The head of the Russian Orthodox Church addressed the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the leaders of Russia and France Vladimir Putin and the Emanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Pope Francis.

    The Patriarch stated about unacceptability of drawing the Church into politics and warned of "irreversible consequences" in case of reverse. According to him, the adoption by Parliament of several draft laws "would jeopardize the constitutional rights of millions of Ukrainian believers, capable to cause a wave of violence and new grips temples, to aggravate a civil conflict in Ukraine, moving it to the religious plane". In the end, this can lead to the obstruction of the implementation of the Minsk agreements on settling the situation in the East of the country.

    The head of the ROC also indicated that if the documents approve the Ukrainian Parliament, the country will be legalized unprecedented for modern Europe discrimination against the Ukrainian Orthodox majority. According to the Patriarch, even in Soviet times, the Church in Ukraine is not faced with similar restrictions. "Something like this existed except during the time of Nazi rule in Germany," — said the Hierarch.

    17 may, Parliament will consider two draft laws on the status of religious organizations. The first (No. 4511) — "On the special status of religious organizations, senior centers are in the state, which is recognized by the Parliament of Ukraine by the aggressor state". Its adoption will mean the need for harmonizing the appointment of bishops and metropolitans with the local authorities. The second bill (No. 4128) specifies the minimum number of parishioners, according to the decision which the community may be reassigned to another religious organization.

    Patriarch Kirill in his letters noted that for the year 2014-2016 to more than 40 temples of the UOC-MP has moved to Kyiv Patriarchate, which is considered in Moscow schismatic.
