• Found an effective way to improve the memory with electricity

  • Neuroscientists at the University of Pennsylvania has developed an effective method for improving memory, based on electrical stimulation of the brain. It is reported by Gizmodo.

The study was conducted in the framework of the project "Restoring active memory", whose goal is to develop implantable brain device. The experiment involved a group of people with epilepsy (it can impair cognitive skills) which had to perform a series of tests to assess memory capacities. In parallel, the researchers stimulated a region of the brain associated with memory formation.

The researchers compared the effects of effects on the brain, with high and low activity. It turned out that in the first case, stimulation worsened the results of the tests, however, the second memory has improved.

This explains why previous studies have led to contradictory conclusions. Scientists believe that their findings will help to develop a method of the closed cycle (closed-loop treatment), in which the implantable device will send electrical impulses only when they are useful. Neuroscientists hope that this will alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other neurodegenerative effects.
