Environmental platoon defense Ministry has completed work on cleaning of the island from the scrap, scheduled for 2016. On Wednesday, November 2, reported in press service reserve.
The work was carried out from may to mid-October. To save space, extruded barrels, and scrap metal cut with a special tool. Then all were loaded into containers and loaded onto barges that transported them to a cargo ship of the Ministry of defense.

The cleaning of the Arctic from waste began almost simultaneously with the return of the Russian military at the polar base. In January 2016, Director of Department of international cooperation Ministry of natural resources Nuritdin Inamov said that Russia in 2016 are expected to be withdrawn and disposed of not less than 8 thousand tons of waste. A thousand tons is planned to withdraw from the New Lands. The treatment program is calculated till 2025.
The project "cleaning the Arctic" supported by the Russian geographical society, Federal state unitary enterprise "Sevmorgeo" and the Foundation of polar research "Polar Foundation". Norilsk Nickel for the period from 2013 to 2020 plans to invest in environmental projects, including those located in the Arctic, 300 billion rubles.
